| The Presbyterians
were one of the first mainline denominations in America. Presbyterians
are distinctive in two major ways: we adhere to a pattern of religious
thought known as Reformed theology and a form of government that stresses
active, representational leadership of both ministers and church members. The word "Presbyterian" comes from the Greek word "Presbuteros," which means "elder," and refers to our representative democracy form of government, where "elders" are elected to govern the church. We have a saying, "Christ alone is lord of the conscience," which means that Christ speaking to the individual conscience is a higher authority than the church. We do not have bishops. We value education and justice and are committed to working to those ends through our mission.
